Recently my attention has turned to the streets where the immediacy and transience of life seems heightened. I record instant impressions with notebook and camera and often combine characters, settings and little moments into complete scenes in the studio. The use of colour is very important to me; the vibrant colours brought out in sunlight are what draws my eye initially but I often use colour symbolically too, changing the hues I observe to those which emphasise the mood of the people I am portraying. In my monochrome oils I try to create a sense of atmosphere; of intimacy without intrusion, a painterly surface texture and a compositional style that references the genre of black and white photography. I want to create something elusive to the frozen image of art - time passing, and a hint that something is about to happen next.
